Umar II on Curses: Someone curses their oppressor until they become even worse than him

October 27, 2016

Riyah ibn Abida reported: I was sitting with Umar ibn Abdul Aziz when (the ruler) Al-Hajjaj was mentioned, so I reviled and denounced him. Umar said, “Calm down, O Riyah! Verily, I have heard that a man might be oppressed with a great wrong and he continues to revile and belittle his oppressor until he forfeits his right and he owes his oppressor even more.”

Abu Darda, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Do not curse anyone, for it not befitting the curser to be with Allah among the truthful on the Day of Resurrection.”
