Hadith on Envy: Jealousy destroys good deeds, charity expiates sinful deeds, and prayer is light

December 15, 2012

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Envy consumes good deeds just as fire burns wood. Charity extinguishes sinful deeds just as water extinguishes fire. Prayer is the light of the believer and fasting is his shield from the Hellfire.”

Ibn Uyainah, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Envy was the first sin by which Allah the Exalted was disobeyed in the heavens, as Iblīs envied Adam. It was the first sin by which Allah was disobeyed on earth, as the son of Adam killed his brother.”
